Sometimes I sit alone in silence. For some this is torture–at times it has been so for me as well–but the older I get I find those times to be refreshing. Stepping away from the constant noise and frantic pace of the modern world affords me a luxury that few wealthy people have. Peace.
Silence is a reset button. It allows us to singly block out the distractions of this world until we are able to finally focus on Jesus. It allows us to hear His voice, and receive direction.
As we gain proficiency in the spiritual discipline of silence, when we are alone in a quiet place, we can develop the ability to quiet ourselves when surrounded by noise and distractions. We can find “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7 ESV).
